Each spring, you can visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and see the greatest display of fireflies, or lightning bugs as they are known on the East Coast. The fireflies, which are beetles, flash patterns of light as part of their mating display. Most have a greenish-yellow light, but there are those that have blue or white lights. Males flash while they are flying, and females respond while they are stationary. If you visit during this time, it is important that you follow some firefly etiquette. Cover flashlights with red cellophane or use one with a red-light filter as light can disrupt the fireflies. Always point the flashlight to the milled and turn it off while seated. Do not catch fireflies and be sure to remove all garbage from the park.
